Captain America: The Winter Soldier premieres exactly one month from now. Marvel is capitalizing on that fact with the release of a new teaser trailer. The marketing of The Winter Soldier has been interesting, as was the marketing for Captain America: The First Avenger. The first film was sold has superhero / war film hybrid, playing up the WWII roots of the character. This sequel film has been marketed as part superhero movie, part political thriller. This latest teaser trailer takes a more familiar action movie route: lots and lots of explosions.
Whereas the previous trailers have highlighted the political intrigue of the film, this trailer focuses on its heroes. Punctuated by the tagline “In Heroes We Trust,” the trailer offers plenty of new footage of Captain America, Black Widow, and The Falcon, as well as some new shots of its titular villain in action.
The trailer doesn’t completely abandon the film’s political connections. Snippets of dialog from Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson contemplate the nature of superheroes in a politically charged world. It’s a welcome bit of reality in a trailer that’s otherwise preoccupied with simply being visually awesome. Captain America: The Winter Soldier premieres on April 4, 2014.
