With Kathleen Kennedy officially handing the presidential duties of Lucasfilm over to Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan, the floodgates have opened as she sheds light on some of the projects that haven’t gotten much attention recently. Among those projects is a spinoff that was announced several years ago, that being a film based solely around the character of Lando Calrissian.
Originally introduced in Empire Strikes Back, Billy Dee Williams was responsible for playing the character throughout the remainder of the original trilogy. A suave, smooth-talking scoundrel turned Rebel hero, Lando was a close friend of Han Solo’s for many years, with Han even getting his iconic Millennium Falcon from Lando in a card game.
When Solo: A Star Wars Story was in development, bringing back Lando was expected from the start. When it came time for filming, Donald Glover came in to portray the younger Lando opposite Alden Ehrenreich’s Han.
In the wake of Solo, a spinoff series focusing on Lando himself was confirmed back in 2020 to be in the works. In 2023, the project would morph from a series into a full-fledged theatrical movie, but from there, the project would stagnate, with very few updates being given.
With Kennedy’s recent interview on Deadline, the Lando film was one of many to be referenced by her. She confirmed that Glover himself did turn in a script, but wasn’t able to discuss it beyond that.
She did further explain, in reference to the many ongoing projects, that “it’s not just my decision, especially when I’ve got a foot out the door.”
