Lakieth Stanfield, known for his lead performance in the film Sorry to Bother You, his supporting role in Jordan Peele’s Get Out, and his Oscar-nominated performance in Judas and the Black Messiah, has officially signed on to replace Jonathan Majors as the former Chicago Bulls player Dennis Rodman in the upcoming film 48 Hours in Vegas, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film is set to be a biographical drama, following Rodman on his trip to Vegas during the 1998 NBA Finals.
This announcement comes nearly two years after Major’s departure from the project. Majors was initially cast to play Rodman in the film. However, after his conviction for harassment and assault of his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari, in early 2022, he was let go from the project.
48 Hours in Vegas will be directed by Rick Famuyiwa. Famuyiwa will also write the screenplay, following a previous draft written by Jordan VanDina. Producers on the film include Phil Lord and Chris Miller through their production company, Lord Miller Productions and Aditya Sood. The film’s executive producers will be Ari Lubet, Lucy Kitada and Rodman himself.
Erin Westerman, president of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, which will be distributing the film, provided this statement following the announcement of Stanfield’s casting:
“Dennis Rodman is more than a basketball player, more than a personality — he’s an entire cultural phenomenon. His bold style and physical presence, combined with an iconic persona, created a larger-than-life impact on and off the court. There’ll never be another like him. LaKeith and the incredibly talented team on this film will bring the legend to life in this most extraordinarily unbelievable story.”
