It’s one thing to remake a movie or franchise that was once popular for a newer audience, but to remake the same movie for the fourth time in a really says something about Hollywood. In this case, they are now trying to re-re-re-remake A Star Is Born, which started out as a 1937 romantic drama before being turned into a critically acclaimed musical in 1954 and a lesser acclaimed on back in 1976. You would think that after two remakes of the same film, people would assume it be the right time to put aside this film and work on something new, but apparently our film industry says otherwise.
Currently Lady Gaga is in negotiations to be cast as the lead role for A Star Is Born, the possible directional debut for actor Bradley Cooper. For those unfamiliar with the plot of the movie, it involves young ingenue who dreams of stardom (in this case Gaga) and a self-destructive, alcoholic former star who helps her become a star (Cooper). This movie has been in development hell for quite a while now, with Clint Eastwood originally set to be the film’s director and Beyoncé taking on the role of the ingenue. The movie will probably cost a budget of about $30 million and does not have a definite release date, although the studio is expecting it to be set sometime in 2017.
While the casting of Lady Gaga (real name Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta) might turn a couple of heads for this upcoming movie, I think that her recent track record suggests some degree of potential. Granted, considering her other roles in previous films, mostly glorified cameos and supporting roles, I can’t really say whether or not she will be amazing or merely ehhh. However, her recent Golden Globe win for her performance in American Horror Story suggests that now might be the time to make the jump into a lead role, so maybe thins will be her big break. Only time will tell once the trailers for this movie are released.
