Before the Cannes digital market launches next week, a new project has announced it will be in the running and is already sparking a lot of discussion. Kristen Stewart will be taking on the formidable role of Princess Diana in drama Spencer, with director Pablo Larraín also on board according to Deadline. The project, with a script by Stephen Knight, will be shopped to potential buyers from June 22-28 at the Cannes Virtual Market.
Larraín has experience with biopic style films, having directed Jackie and Neruda. This film will not be covering all of Diana’s life, but rather following only 3 days during one of her last holidays at the House of Windsor during a tumultuous time for her marriage to Prince Charles. Larraín says he was drawn to the story because of the “fairytale upside down” aspect of being princess, but not wanting to be queen, which is the experience that Diana has during these significant 3 days.
The title Spencer comes from Diana’s family name before she married Prince Charles. It aligns with the overall trajectory of the film, which focuses on her desire to be independent of the royal family.
On the casting of Stewart, Larraín says he is excited to work with her and considers her a great talent. He said about her relationship to the role, “The way she responded to the script and how she is approaching the character, it’s very beautiful to see. I think she’s going to do something stunning and intriguing at the same time. She is this force of nature.” Stewart has been known to work both in mainstream and independent films, this project being a major interesting addition to her acting reel.
If things go according to plan, production will be begin in early 2021.
