Kristen Stewart is currently in talks to lead Twentieth Century Fox’s action-thriller Underwater, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film is being directed by The Signal scribe Will Eubank and is being produced by Chernin Entertainment.
Underwater is being billed as a below-surface Armageddon and will tell the story of an underwater scientific crew that must fight to survive after an unexpected earthquake compromises their journey. Stewart, if the deal goes through, will play a jaded and hardened member of the crew.
Brian Duffield (Insurgent) wrote the original script, which has since undergone revisions by Adam Cozad (The Legend of Tarzan, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit). The filmmakers are looking at a March production start date in New Orleans.
Stewart has built up quite an indie resume as of late, appearing most recently in such films as Still Alice, Clouds of Sils Maria, Equals, and Certain Women among others. This seems like it may be a return to more mainstream projects. Her last visit to a more action studio-based film was for 2012’s Snow White and the Huntsman and Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2.
