‘Knives Out’ Sequel Gets Greenlit By Lionsgate

Knives Out is now set to become a franchise! Lionsgate’s CEO Jon Feltheimer announced Thursday evening that a sequel to the 2019 box office hit has been officially greenlit, and hinted that a production commencement with director Rian Johnson would begin promptly, according to Deadline.

Word of the sequel to the “Daniel Craig as a detective with a Southern twang” vehicle comes several weeks after Johnson earned his first Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Currently still in theaters, Knives Out is approaching the $300 million earnings mark at the global box office. Next to Midway and Bombshell, Knives Out became the third highest grossing film for Lionsgate in the third quarter of 2019. All three films were a boon for Lionsgate, allowing the company to generate revenue by 30%.

Johnson was hyping up a sequel to Knives Out ever since the film was released in theaters late last year. Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Michael Shannon, who made up the film’s ensemble cast, have all expressed interest in returning for a sequel. The film was a critical darling when released in November, earning three Golden Globe nominations and several nominations for Johnson for Best Original Screenplay at the BAFTAs and the Critics’ Choice Awards.
