Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, Adam Mason’s Songbird will not be shown in theaters, but instead will be shown through premium VOD release starting Friday, December 11th. Songbird was one of the first films to begin filming in Los Angeles during the pandemic, and is based off of the deadly outbreak. The film takes place in 2024, and tells the story of Nico, portrayed by Riverdale’s KJ Apa, a man who is immune to the COVID-23 virus. Due to the lockdown, he hasn’t seen his girlfriend (Sofia Carson), and when she becomes infected, Nico must save her from a quarantine camp. Demi Moore, Craig Robinson, Bradley Whitford, Peter Stormare, Alexandra Daddario and Paul Walter Hauser also star in the thriller.
According to Deadline, director Adam Mason stated that, “The pandemic has affected every aspect of our business, from production to release, but Songbird demonstrates that a nimble studio like STX can find effective and profitable ways to make their movies work, as we have similarly with Greenland and My Spy during these challenging times”. The film will be available for $19.99 for a 48-hour rental on all platforms. After Songbird’s release on PVOD, it will premiere on a major streaming service in 2021.
