After reading that title, you wouldn’t be blamed if your first thought was, “There’s a Samurai Cop 1?” Indeed there is. Samurai Cop is a 1991 low (extremely low)-budget action film directed by Amir Shervan – whose credits include Hollywood Cop, Killing American Style, and a handful of films made in his home country Iran. The film received little attention on its initial release, but recently it’s been elevated to cult status thanks to fans of midnight movies and cinematic cheese.

With this new found fame, the next logical step would be a remake, right? Nope, that’s Hollywood thinking. Instead, more than twenty years later, Samurai Cop is getting a direct sequel, Samurai Cop 2: Deadly Vengeance. New director Gregory Hatanaka and co-producer Rich Mallery are hoping to gain funding through Kickstarter. The goal is $50,000, and the deadline is September 21, 2014.
It’s 25 years later, and Detective Frank Washington is forced to team up with his long estranged partner Joe Marshall to solve a series of assassinations being committed by a secret group of female vigilante killers.
Matt Hannon, star of the original is returning as the titular Samurai Cop, along with Mark Frazer, Melissa Moore, and Gerald Okamura. New cast members include the one-time James Bond, George Lazenby; frequent John Cassavetes collaborator, Seymour Cassel; and villainous performance expert, Henry Silva.
