Key Cast Members Of ‘Lord Of The Rings’ Trilogy Elaborate On If They Would Return To Their Roles

The long-standing Lord Of The Rings franchise moves towards a new movie on the horizon as other shows and movies have been recently released. With so many other stories being told in Middle-Earth, some stars of Peter Jackson’s film trilogy have stated if they’d reprise their roles or not. 

Based off J.R.R. Tolkien’s book series, The Lord Of The Rings follows Elijah Wood’s Frodo Baggins after inheriting a magic ring from his uncle. When learning that the ring belongs to the dark lord Sauron, and could bring about a new age of darkness across Middle Earth, Frodo sets off to destroy the ring with the help of his new friends. 

MovieWeb reports key members of the cast from the trilogy shared if they would come back as their characters, if ever given the chance. 

Screenrant hosted a panel at Awesome Con to talk about the films and the story with Sean Astin, who played Samwise Gamgee, Orlando Bloom, who played Legolas, John Rhys-Davies, who played Gimli, and Liv Tyler, who played Arwen. Each cast member, in turn, gave a different response. 

Tyler didn’t mince words in her response, saying that she would “just do anything” when it comes to reprising Arwen. Similarly, Bloom said he’d return as Legolas, but had more reserves than Tyler did, stating that the magic of making the trilogy the first time is not something easily recaptured. 

John Rhys-Davies was similarly open to returning to play Gimli but much like Bloom he had one caveat. As he played Gimli, he required a facial prosthetic to achieve the look of a dwarf, but he’s been very open with how uncomfortable it was since he first played Gimli. Simply put, he said he’d return as long as he doesn’t have to use the prosthetic. 

Between all four of them, Sean Astin was the most hesitant to return. He explained to the crowd how people would often come up to him to express their love for the films and the experiences it gave them since the release. He elaborated further saying that he’s unsure how difficult it would be to approach the role of Samwise again, knowing what he does now of how important it is to people.
