Gore Vidal will receive a biopic by Netflix and will be played by one of the most famous actors in the current generation: Kevin Spacey, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Spacey has been a huge hit since the 1990’s, with American Beauty and The Usual Suspects providing him with two Oscars. He most recently featured as the main character in the Netflix TV show House of Cards and in Edgar Wright’s newest film Baby Driver.
The film does not currently have a title, but the story will focus on Vidal’s turbulent life. Vidal was a renowned and provocative writer whose career spanned almost 50 years across television, film, literature, and politics. In film, he was most well known for being a script doctor for the film Ben-Hur (1959) and screenplay writer for Billy the Kid. Vidal, in the 1970’s, purchased La Rondinaia Ravello in Italy in an attempt to revitalize his novel writing career. He would own the cliffside mansion for over 30 years, finally selling it in 2004 and returning the United States, where he died of pneumonia in 2012. Vidal had a famous rivalry with rightist political commentator William F. Buckley Jr., which was featured in the 2015 documentary Best of Enemies.
The film has already begun its pre-production in Rome, Italy, and is being directed by Michael Hoffman (The Best of Me, The Last Station). We hope to see the movie release in 2018 or 2019, and we are excited to see how Spacey will play the famous writer.
