Kevin Feige And Patty Jenkins ‘Star Wars’ Projects Up in the Air, Taika Waiti Project Still On Solid Ground

The future of potential Star Wars feature projects is currently up in the air due to mixed news. While Kevin Feige and Patty Jenkins have had to shelve their projects, Taika Waititi has some grounds for a future release.

While streaming series like The Mandalorian and Andor has received strong support on Disney+, feature films have been put on hold thanks to the box office and the critical failure of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm expects to release a possible Star Wars film by December 2025 at the earliest.

In Patty Jenkions’ case, she was slated in 2020 to direct the one-off adventure Rogue Squadron. However, Disney pulled the film from their 2023 release schedule on September 2022. Lucasfilm has been unavailable for comment, but Jenkins refuses to give up on her project completely. While she is unsure of its future, she is still developing it.

Kevin Feige, on the other hand, was developing project with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and had been on track to release it soon. During a 2022 interview with Variety, screenwriter Michael Waldron announced his involvement in the project and his excitement about “having the freedom on that to do something that’s not necessarily a sequel or anything.”

Five months later, Feige reassigned Waldron to write the screenplay for 2026’s Marvel project Avengers: Secret Wars, an Endgame-like entry that will cover the multiverse. Due to a mix of this and 19 other Marvel projects set for release in the next four years, Feige will be kept away from Star Wars for now.

So far, one of the few potential projects that will be released by 2025 is Taika Waititi’s film. According to several sources, Waititi is continuing his feature’s development and will possibly star in it, similar to his work in Jojo Rabbit and Thor: Love and Thunder. Along with Waititi, Oscar-winning documentarian Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and director Justin Britt-Gibson are committed to writing a screenplay for a potential Star Wars project.

Either way, the futures of these feature projects will be decided during the London Star Wars Celebration convention on the weekend of April 7th. With the competition against other update announcements for other Disney+ series, all fans can do is hold their breath and wait to see what will become of the franchise.
