It has just been announced by Deadline that Kerry Washington, the star of ABC’s hit series Scandal, is joining the cast of Ryan Murphy‘s Netflix film The Prom.
Washington joins an impressive cast that includes Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep, Awkwafina, James Corden, Keegan-Michael Key, and Andrew Rannells. According to The Prom‘s IMDb page, the film is about “A troupe of hilariously self-obsessed theater stars [that] swarm into a small conservative Indiana town in support of a high school girl who wants to take her girlfriend to the prom.” Washington will star as Dee Dee Allen, Corden’s character’s frequent co-star on the Broadway stage. After their careers take hits after a bad performance, they decide to pull a PR stunt by joining the characters of Kidman and Rannells to help a high school girl in Indiana take her girlfriend to prom.
Ryan Murphy is set to direct from an original concept by Jack Viertel that Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin have adapted into a screenplay. Since the film will be a musical, Beguelin and Matthew Sklar will be writing the lyrics.
Murphy, meanwhile, has been producing a host of critically acclaimed shows, with most of them appearing on Netflix after signing a contract with the company. Recently, his show Pose has been nominated for multiple Emmys, with Billy Porter’s win for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series breaking records as the first gay black male to do so. His other shows include FX’s American Horror Story in its ninth season and The Politician that was just released on Netflix.
