Kenneth Branagh is most known for directing and starring in Shakespeare adaptations. From Hamlet, to Othello, to Much Ado About Nothing, he has done it all. Now, he stars alongside Ryan Reynolds in the action film Mayday. While he has had a hand in action movies such as Tenet and Thor, he has never been an action star.
In a recent interview, Branagh stated that he never expected to be an action star, but he welcomed it, saying, “But I was most certainly up for it.” He added, “Frankly, if you do Shakespeare, there are 37 plays, and about 34 of them have a big fight at the end. So you’re always practicing.”
Mayday is directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves) and follows a crash-landed American pilot (Ryan Reynolds) and his unlikely friendship with a Soviet (Kenneth Branagh). Ryan Reynolds had this to say about the film: “You have this Cold War happening and you have an expectation of what the, quote, ‘enemy’ is, and the enemy has this expectation of what you are, and both are wrong. While we’re subverting expectation, I like that I’m sort of the classical damsel-in-distress in this movie.”
Mayday releases on Apple TV+ on September 4.
