The much anticipated prequel to The Hunger Games, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is set to be released in the U.S. on November 23. The film follows a young President Snow, only known as Coriolanus Snow, as he is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird from District 12 for the 10th annual Hunger Games. Much speculation has been circulated about whether Jennifer Lawerence, who plays Katniss Everdeen in the original movies, will be making an appearance in the upcoming movie. Katniss Everdeen was Jennifer Lawerence’s breakout role in 2012, so many are wondering if she will reprise the iconic character in future Hunger Games films.
Producer Nina Jacobson and director Francis Lawerence addressed the speculation saying they doubt Katniss’ character will ever make an on-screen appearance again, as her story within the thematic universe has come to an end.
Jacobson said in an article with Yahoo! Entertainment, “If Suzanne [Collins] has something to say, then she’ll write a book about it. Honestly, as much as I love Katniss, I think her story is complete. And I think Suzanne feels that her story is complete. But if that changes, and Suzanne has something she wants to say, and it involves Katniss, then I would be thrilled. But really any chance to be back in this world, and lead with France and Suzanne, I would take regardless of who it was about.”
Although there are no reports of new stories surrounding Katniss Everdeen, Suzanne Collins, author of The Hunger Games trilogy has not definitively said Katniss’ story has come to an end. But for now, the story is focused on a time before Katniss was even born, exploring President Snow’s origin story.
