Katheryn Winnick to Co-Star with Idris Elba in ‘The Dark Tower’

Katheryn Winnick (TV’s Vikings) has joined the cast of Sony’s The Dark Tower, alongside Idris Elba (Star Trek Beyond) and Academy Award-winning actor Matthew McConaughey (Interstellar).

The film is based on seven novels by Stephen King that collectively make up The Dark Tower series. Elba will star as gunslinger Roland Deschain, who travels the old west in search of a dark tower that could save his dying world. McConaughey plays the evil Man in Black, Deschain’s nemesis. Winnick’s role has yet to be confirmed. Abbey Lee (Mad Max: Fury Road), Jackie Earle Haley (London Has Fallen), Fran Kranz (Mojave), Tom Taylor (TV’s Legends), and Michael Barbieri (Little Men) round out the cast.

Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair) will helm from a screenplay adaptation he co-wrote with Akiva Goldsman, Anders Thomas Jensen, and Jeff Pinkner (who is also executive producing). Ron Howard and Brian Grazer are producing under their Imagine Entertainment banner. King and Erica Huggins will also act as producers.

Canadian-born Winnick plays Lagertha in History Channel’s Vikings, now in its second season. She will be seen next opposite Gerard Butler (London Has Fallen) in the climate change disaster film Geostorm.

The Dark Tower is currently in production and will open in theaters on February 17, 2017.
