Critically acclaimed actors Viggo Mortensen, Clive Owen, and Daniel Brühl are no strangers to praise from their peers in the film industry. All three industry fixtures are set to receive honors at this year’s Karlovy Vary Film Festival, Eastern and Central Europe’s premier film event, with Mortenson set to open the festivities with his newest film The Dead Don’t Hurt.
Mortensen, Owen, and Brühl are all set to receive the festival’s prestigious Festival President’s Award, acknowledging Owen’s accomplishments as an actor, and Mortenson and Brühl’s accomplishments as actor-directors. The festival is set to screen Mike Nichols’ 2004 film Closer, for which Owen was nominated for an Oscar, in honor of his award. Brühl will be presenting a screening of his critically acclaimed 2021 directorial debut Next Door to mark his reception of Karlovy Vary’s highest honor.
The festival will also be honoring legendary director Steven Soderbergh, who will present both his 1991 film Kafka and his 2021 film Mr. Kneff, both of which will serve as the festival’s recognition of movies inspired by the works of Czech writer Franz Kafka. Karlovy Vary will also be paying tribute to the career of American filmmaker Nicole Holofcener, screening her critically acclaimed films Please Give, Enough Said, and You Hurt My Feelings.
