Justine Triet’s ‘Anatomy Of A Fall’ Dominates At Cesar Awards

Anatomy of a Fall won big at the Cesar Awards this year. The film–currently vying for a number of awards at the Oscars–not only won Best Film, Best Editing, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actress (awarded to Sandra Hüller), and Best Supporting Actor (awarded to Swann Arlaud) at the Cesar Awards this year, but it also gave filmmaker Justine Triet the award for Best Director, making her the second female filmmaker to do this in the Award’s 49-year history. When accepting the award, Triet dedicated it to all women, “those who feel trapped in their choices, in their solitude, those who exist too much and those who don’t exist enough, to those who were wounded and liberate themselves by speaking out.”

In Hüller’s acceptance speech for Best Actress, she opted to speak in French instead of German. The actress studied the language in order to prepare for and execute her role in Anatomy of a Fall. Commenting on this feat, she stated, “It’s not possible! I’m a German actress!…The language, the origin was never an obstacle on the set but rather a possibility…It should always be that way.”
