According to Variety, Justin Theroux (The Girl On the Train) is now aboard the cast of sci-fi thriller Mute, joining Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) and Alexander Skarsgard (The Legend of Tarzan). Duncan Jones (Source Code) will helm from a screenplay he co-wrote with Michael Robert Johnson. Jones has been working on developing the film for the past 12 years.
The story is set 40 years in the future, and centers on a mute bartender in Berlin (Skarsgard) searching for his missing partner in a city of rolling immigrants. He goes up against gangsters in his quest, and recurring clues center on two American surgeons. The film will be produced by Stuart Fenegen under Jones and Fenegan’s Liberty Films banner. Netflix has acquired distribution rights.
Theroux can currently be seen in theaters in The Girl On the Train starring Emily Blunt. He also stars in the HBO series The Leftovers, now in production for its third and final season. Theroux co-wrote Zoolander 2 and Tropic Thunder with Ben Stiller and contributed to the screenplay for Iron Man 2.
Mute will bow in theaters in 2017.
