After writer Roberto Orci left the director’s chair for Star Trek 3 earlier this month, it is now known that Fast and Furious 6 director Justin Lin will take his place, according to Deadline. No plot details have been released for the sequel.
Paramount has had trouble finding a suitable replacement for J.J. Abrams, who directed the series reboot in 2009 and its sequel last year, Star Trek: Into Darkness. It was confirmed that Abrams would not return to the franchise after he signed on to direct the Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens. Robert Orci, who wrote the scripts for the first two films, was originally brought on to direct, but later fell out. After that happened, Lin was reportedly the only director offered the job. Paramount is likely hoping that Lin can direct the series towards the similar success he found when he rebooted the Fast & Furious franchise with the fourth installment Fast & Furious, Fast Five, and Fast & Furious 6. Lin was set to direct sequel to The Bourne Legacy with Jeremy Renner, but that project was put on hold when Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass announced they would return to the franchise.
Lin is also set to direct a reboot of The Wolf Man for Universal, as well as a two-part finale for the Fast & Furious series. It’s unclear how this will affect his availability for those projects.
