Radar Pictures, who recently had a hand in Sony’s Jumanji movies, has officially locked up the rights to a film inspired by “Karn Evil 9,” based on a quasi-futuristic 1973 song written and performed by London rock band Emerson, Lake & Palmer, according to Deadline. Karn Evil 9 is set to be a sci-fi picture that was adapted into a screenplay by New York Times bestselling novelist Daniel H. Wilson. The film is loosely inspired by the song title, as well as its lyrics by Emerson, Lake & Palmer.
Wilson is responsible for other sci-fi works such as Robopocalypse and The Andromeda Evolution, the latter of which is being developed into a film by Michael Bay and DreamWorks. Karn Evil 9 will take place in a society that has drained its physical resources on means of technology and seeks to further examine a world maintained by a dictatorship comprised of technological law.
Michael Napoliello and Maria Frisk will be tasked with producing the film for Radar Pictures. Ted Field will serve as executive producer after producing a plethora of films for the studio, which include the Jumanji franchise, Spring Breakers, The Last Samurai, Runaway Bride and the Chronicles of Riddick series. Radar Pictures upcoming slate of projects include a television adaptation of Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time, which will be produced alongside Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television.
