Oscar winner Julia Roberts appears set for Lionsgate’s Wonder, new drama in which the Erin Brockovich star will portray the mother of Room breakout Jacob Tremblay. The film is an adaptation of R.J. Palacio’s best-selling novel and has Stephen Chbosky (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) set to direct from a screenplay from Steve Conrad (The Pursuit of Happyness).
The story centers around a young boy named Auggie Pullman who was born with a facial deformity and how he struggles to fit in as he enters his first “mainstream” school. The film may mark another memorable role for Tremblay, already a seasoned vet at the age of nine. He helped carry the Oscar winning indie Room alongside Brie Larson (who took home statue) and will soon be seen the horror entry Before I Wake. Tremblay recently completed work on Burn Your Maps alongside Oscar nominated actor Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air) and The Book of Henry, the upcoming drama from director Colin Treverrow (Jurassic World) starring Naomi Watts.
Wonder will mark the third feature film for director Chbosky, who earned strong notices for adapting his own novel The Perks of Being a Wallflower; he has since penned the screenplay for Disney’s upcoming live-action reboot of Beauty and the Beast. Roberts can currently be seen in Garry Marshall’s Mother’s Day and will soon be featured in Jodie Foster’s Cannes-bound Money Monster starring George Clooney and Jack O’Connell.
Lionsgate and Mandeville Films will be selling the film at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival. As of now, there doesn’t appear to be confirmed start time on when production will begin.
