Judd Apatow is saddling up with Universal Pictures once again to co-write and direct an original comedy. The relationship between the famed director and the studio has produced an abundance of iconic films like Knocked Up, Bridesmaids, and The 40-Year-Old Virgin over the past 20 years. Now, Apatow will direct A-lister Glen Powell.
In an unusual move for an actor, Powell is co-writing the script with Apatow. The movie, which has been fast-tracked at Universal, is set in the world of country music and follows a country western star in free fall.
The Twisters actor has seen a significant recent rise to fame, with an especially successful 2023. Powell starred in Richard Linklater’s critically acclaimed Netflix film, Hit Man. He also co-starred in Anyone But You with Sydney Sweeney, the first rom-com to surpass $200 million at the box office in over five years.
Powell is working nonstop with other legendary directors. He stars in Edgar Wright’s The Running Man, which is set for a November 7 release. He has also secured a role in a J.J. Abrams untitled project.
Both Apatow and Powell are producing the comedy through their respective companies. Apatow through Apatow Productions, and Powell through he and his partner Dan Cohen’s company, Barnstorm. Kevin Misher of Misher Films will produce as well.
