In an interview on Late Night With Seth Meyers, Spaceballs 2 co-writer and star Josh Gad explained how he initiated the sequel to Spaceballs, the 1987 movie that parodied popular science-fiction such as Star Wars and Star Trek

“I went to bed that night, and I swear to God, I dreamt up the entire movie that we’re about to start shooting in two weeks. And I called Mel Brooks.” Gad said. “He said, after I pitched him, ‘Josh I’ve been waiting 35 years for this phone call.'”

Brooks produced and directed the original Spaceballs. The film nearly doubled its budget in box office sales, but received mixed reviews from critics. Since its release, it has gained a cult following.

Spaceballs 2, which is expected to reach theaters in 2027, will be directed by Josh Greenbaum. Mel Brooks will return as Yogurt, a spoof-version of Star Wars’ Yoda. Kevin Slater, Benji Samit, Adam Merims, and Dan Hernandez are the film’s executive producers. Amazon MGM Studios will release the movie.

Details regarding the plot of Spaceballs 2 have been kept confidential.
