Josh Gad Co-Writes Four Part Comic Series Based On Jewish Folklore

Broadway and film actor Josh Gad has decided to pick up a pen and has written a new comic book series with comic writers Ben and Max Berkowitz.

In an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the series is about writer Stan Siegel and how he is flung into a Nazi occult-fueled nightmare and how he must use his writing abilities to become a hero.

The series, titled The Writer has Jewish folklore all throughout the story, as the Berkowitz brothers say that they saw a trend of Jewish characters having their histories being erased in Hollywood adaptations. But with this series, the brothers hope to have a story that represents where they come from and shows the inspiration they got from media they consumed when they were kids.

While this might be Gad’s first time writing a comic series, his team are far from beginners. Not only is the comic going to be published by Dark Horse Comics, who have published series such as Sin City and Hellboy, but they also have artist Ariel Olivetti on the team, who has worked for Marvel and DC Comics in the past.

This wasn’t the first time that Gad was approached to work on a comic, as comic book writer and screenwriter Frank Miller reached out to him years before to see if he was interested in working in the comic industry.

At the time, Gad didn’t feel like he had the story or confidence to do it at the time. But now working with the Berkowitz brothers, he feels he has that connection to make a story.

The Writer is set to release its first issue in comic shops starting June 19. There is currently a trailer available with Gad voice acting as Stan Siegel to promote the series.
