Joseph Kosinski’s Miami Vice movie, starring Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler, has received a new title and release date. The film, now titled Miami Vice ’85, will be released on Aug. 6, 2027.
The film is based on the 1980s series of the same name, created by Anthony Yerkovich and starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas. It is the second film adaptation of the TV series, following Michael Mann’s 2006 adaptation, which starred Collin Farrell and Jamie Foxx.
Austin Butler will play James “Sonny” Crockett in Miami Vice ’85, a role originated by Don Johnson in the 80s TV series and previously played by Farrell in the Michael Mann movie. Michael B. Jordan will play Ricardo Tubbs, a role originated by Philip Michael Thomas and previously played by Jamie Foxx in the Michael Mann movie.
Joseph Kosinski will be directing Miami Vice ’85, from a script by Dan Gilroy. A previous draft of the script was written by Eric Warren Singer. Kosinski will be shooting the film on IMAX-certified cameras, much as he did with his previous two films: Top Gun: Maverick and F1. The film’s producers are Kosinski and Dylan Clark.
Miami Vice ’85 will be released by Universal Pictures. Production is set to begin later this year.
