Joseph Gordon-Levitt Drops Out of ‘Sandman’

The planned film adaptation of the respected comic Sandman took major blow today as Joseph Gordon-Levitt has officially dropped out of the project. Gordon-Levitt had been projected to both direct and star in the movie, adapted from Neil Gaiman’s comic creation that ran on DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint from 1988 to 1966. Gordon-Levitt took to Facebook to announce his departure from the project.

Gordon-Levitt’s departure appears to stem from “creative differences” after the film moved from Warner Bros. to their subsidiary New Line Cinema; further explanation hasn’t been provided as of yet. The actor- who made his directorial debut with the 2013 comedy Don Jon – was set to also produce the film along with David Goyer (who recently penned the screenplay for the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice). The news comes on the heels that Sandman had brought in a new scribe in Eric Heisserer (The Conjuring 2, Final Destination 5). The original screenwriter was Jack Thorne (How I Live Now).

Gordon-Levitt, who proved his comic-book bona fides with a supporting part in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, was last seen on screens in The Walk and the comedy The Night Before. In the pipeline, he has the lead role in Oliver Stone’s upcoming Snowden and appears set to co-star alongside Channing Tatum (Hail, Caesar!) in an untitled musical comedy.
