Joseph Fiennes: Confronting Weinstein Before the Rest of Hollywood Did

Joseph Fiennes recently opened up about his encounter with Harvey Weinstein in the 1990s and the subsequent impact it had on his career. In an interview with The Guardian newspaper in the UK, Fiennes shared the details of a meeting he had with the film producer in 1998, shortly after his notable performances in the films Shakespeare in Love and Elizabeth.

 According to Fiennes, he was requested to meet Weinstein in a hotel room where he was presented a five-picture deal under Weinstein’s company, Miramax. During the meeting, Weinstein exhibited an intimating and aggressive demeanor. He made it explicitly clear that rejecting the offer would have negative consequences for Fiennes career. 

The actor describe the experience as feeling bullied and found it shocking. However, he expressed satisfaction in making the right decision to stay true to his principles and decline the offer.

Fiennes stated, ‘He made it clear that he won’t support me. He’ll make a very strong movement not to support me. I was out of the family. But I was very happy not to be in the family.’

Since then, Fitness has continued to find his success in his career, starring on the television series The Handmaid’s Tale for four seasons, portraying the character Fred Waterford. His performance in the role earned him an Emmy nomination. Weinstein has became infamous for his sexual predator behaviors and was convicted of five felonies, resulting in a 23-year-old prison sentence.
