As part of a recent two-year first look deal made with surprise hit Get Out director Jordan Peele, Universal Pictures announced on Monday a 2019 release date for Peele’s second directorial effort.
Set to be another sociopolitical thriller in the vein of Get Out, Peele will write, direct and produce the untitled film slated for a March 15, 2019 release.
This year’s Get Out took critics and audiences by storm with its bold storytelling and has since grossed nearly $230 million worldwide under a humble $5 million budget. The film’s success has spurred numerous industry accolades, buzz for the 2018 Academy Awards, and made Peele an instant hot ticket director, even garnering him an offer to direct the long-gestating live action adaptation of Akira for Warner Bros., which he recently turned down.
Due to his newfound popularity and prestige, Peele’s second film is looking to have a production budget about five times larger than that of Get Out, which Peele made with producer Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions. Under the deal with Universal, the projects Peele will produce will have a key focus on giving voices and opportunities to racial, gender, and LGBTQ groups that have been underrepresented in front of the cameras and behind the scenes.
