Jordan Peele, who has been lauded for his horror films Us and Get Out, will be producing another Candyman film. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will be featured as the Candyman. The original 1992 Candyman movie, directed by Bernard Rose, tells the story of a lynched slave played by Tony Todd who comes to whoever calls his name. The film is an adaptation of Clive Barker’s short story “The Forbidden.” On a deeper level, the story depicts America’s racist past and urban crime. These larger themes embedded in the film fit Peele’s storytelling style and his tendency to approach serious topics in an indirect way.
Ian Cooper, Peele’s producing partner, stated at a Produced By Conference panel that the movie will be comprehensible even if viewers have not seen the original. “What we’re doing with Candyman and how Jordan is crafting it on the page is going to be very exciting and rewarding to audiences that haven’t seen the original film as well as people who’ve seen the original film. In a broad sense of the word, this film will stand alone if you’ve never heard of a film called Candyman and will dovetail in a pretty complicated and interesting way to the original.”
The film is set to debut on June 12, 2020.
