Jordan Peele, director of modern horror classics like Get Out (2017) and Us (2019) is teaming up with Insecure creator Issa Rae to produce Universal’s new supernatural thriller, Sinkhole, which tells the story of a family moving into a house with a seemingly magic sinkhole in the yard which fixes things that are broken and makes them new again once they are taken out of the hole. Per Variety, Sinkhole plans to have Rae star in a leading role and will be co-produced by her production company, Issa Rae Productions.
While it is unsure if Peele will direct the feature, it certainly seems right up his alley in terms of the supernatural, metaphoric “elevated horror” that he has since mastered since the days of Key and Peele. Sinkhole will also be produced by his own Monkeypaw Productions, and is a part of his five-project deal with Universal. Aside form Us, Peele has most recently helped produced Spike Lee’s Blackkklansman (2018), which garnered them Oscar nominations.
Rae’s latest feature role was in 2020’s The Photograph, which featured her alongside Sorry to Bother You‘s Lakeith Stanfield in one of the last films to be released in theaters before the pandemic hit.
Sinkhole is based on a short story by Leyna Krow.
