After Sony and Disney/Marvel were able to reconcile their differences on Spider-Man’s financial future this Friday, both studios are back at work to get a new Spider-Man film off the ground. Heads are currently in negotiations, with director Jon Watts set to return to helm a Spider-Man: Far From Home follow-up, according to Deadline.
Watt’s current deal with the studios was set to expire but, after the franchise earned a cool $2 billion at the box office, Disney/Marvel felt it was natural for continuity sakes to bring Watts back. However, with Sony and Marvel in the midst of their co-financing debacle, Watt’s future with the franchise was put in limbo. During the span in which the Sony-Disney dispute occurred- forcing fans to revolt- Watts was unsigned for the follow-up Spider-Man feature and was not locked in for future plans.
Watt’s Spider-Man: Homecoming brought a huge chunk of change for Sony and Disney, as the film grossed $880 million globally while his follow-up, Spider-Man: Far From Home became the highest grossing film for the series accumulating $1.13 billion worldwide coming off the heels of the equally-successful Avengers: Endgame. As the reports indicated last week, Disney will fund 25% of the film for a 25% equity stake while Sony will earn from the distribution fees. The deal also includes several Tom Holland appearances outside of the franchise.
