Jon M. Chu is revving his engines for his next film. He’s just been signed on to direct the brand new Hot Wheels movie.
Coming from Warner Bros., as well as Bad Robot and Electric Somewhere, the film will bring to life Mattel’s uber-popular toy line. For over 50 years, Hot Wheels have been a mainstay in the toy aisles, delivering detailed miniatures of all types of cars, both real and imaginative.
This won’t be the first time Mattel and Warner Bros. collaborate for a project. 2023 saw them pair up for Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, in which Margot Robbie played Barbie as she goes on a journey of discovery. As soon as the film was released, it became a massive hit, making a whopping $1.4 billion worldwide, getting glowing reviews from critics and audiences alike.
Deadline notes that Chu boarding the project is looking especially promising given his recent directorial successes. On Thanksgiving last year he released Wicked to theaters, telling the origin story of Wizard Of Oz’s Wicked Witch of the West. It resulted in $750 million worldwide at the box office and several Oscar nominations for the film, and it still has a highly anticipated second part releasing later this year.
On top of both Wicked films, Chu has also directed Crazy Rich Asians, In The Heights, and Now You See Me 2.
