Warner Bros. is simply on a roll this week. After announcing a standalone Joker origins film (being produced by Martin Scorsese), and starting stir with the possibility that The Batman would veer out of their established DCEU (Matt Reeves essentially put these rumors to rest today on Twitter), the studio is now revealing that they are developing a spinoff for The Joker and Harley Quinn, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Helming the film will be the team behind Crazy Stupid Love and NBC’s This is Us, Glenn Ficarra and John Requa. According to the duo the new film will be “an insane and twisted love story. When Harry Met Sally on benzedrine.”
The Joker and Harley Quinn first appeared in the DCEU in Suicide Squad, portrayed by Jared Leto and Margot Robbie, respectively. In that film, audiences got small, albeit disorganized, taste of their doctor/patient acid induced love story. The two actors will reportedly return to the rolls for Suicide Squad 2 before the Joker/Harley film takes off. Although Leto will not be involved in the Joker origin story spinoff (a younger actor will be launched into that film), Warner Bros. has led sources to believe that they are further along in development with Joker/Harley.
If this news tells us anything, it is that Warner Bros. is completely invested in its hot ticket characters, i.e. Wonder Woman, Batman, Harley Quinn, and The Joker, by creating a clear focus for them in their extended universe and spinoff plans. Unlike the Marvel Universe or Star Wars, that stick to linear timelines, storytelling, and incorporating countless arcs, D.C. has something a bit different up their sleeve, banking on the lasting popularity of their most bait-y characters.
