Early news out of Cannes has Johnny Depp teaming up with directing partners Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (Focus, Crazy Stupid Love) for the fascinating true story King of the Jungle.
Based on the Wired article “John McAfee’s Last Stand” by Joshua Davis, the film will follow the wild pursuits of John McAfee, the creator of McAfee Antivirus Software. Golden Globe/Emmy winners and writing partners Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski (American Crime Story) penned the script.
After cashing in on his business, McAfee left the country and civilization and moved to the jungles of Belize. There he set up a compound filled with guns, sex, and uninhibited madness. King of the Jungle will kick off when a Wired magazine reporter visits McAfee in Belize for what he believes will be a normal assignment, but instead becomes caught up in the former businessman’s world of paranoia, shaky reality, and murder. It looks as though Depp will be adding yet another left-of-center character to his ever-expanding list.
Conde Nast, the company that owns Wired Magazine, is producing the film through their Conde Nast Entertainment banner. IMR International will be handling foreign sales at Cannes.
Depp will next be seen in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales as well as in Kenneth Branagh’s Murder on the Orient Express.
