Avengers: Endgame has been dominating the box office every weekend since its late April release, that is until this past weekend when John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum took the top slot. Wick’s grand total domestically was $57 million, while Endgame’s was only $29.4 million.
The third film in the hyper-violent, stylish assassin trilogy shows a significant increase in popularity since the first film’s debut in 2014. Each film has almost doubled the opening of the previous installment, with John Wick bringing in $14.4 million and John Wick: Chapter 2 at $30.4 million.
Chapter 3 covers main man John Wick (Keanu Reeves) as he runs for his life with a massive bounty on his head, placed there by the prolific assassin league he was once part of. He returns to those he thinks he can trust to protect his life, bringing in new characters and a new cast. Halle Berry, Anjelica Huston, Mark Dacascos, and Asia Kate Dillon are among the new recruits to the franchise. Familiar faces also return including Laurence Fishburne and Ian McShane.
So far, the reviews have been positive with a A- Cinemascore and 88% critic and 93% user ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. The film follows its predecessors with its signature over the top violence, stylish lighting, devoted dog ownership, and suit-clad, gun wielding Keanu that keeps fans coming back.
