John Mulaney is in talks with Warner Bros. to star in a reboot of spy-comedy Get Smart. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Seth Grahame-Smith (Now You See Me: Now You Don’t) is writing the screenplay and Charles Roven (Oppenheimer) and Andrew Lazar (American Sniper) will be producing the film. The first iteration of Get Smart was made in 1965 as a tv series on NBC. It was created by Mel Brooks (Spaceballs) and Buck Henry (The Graduate) and starred Don Adams as Maxwell Smart and Barbara Feldon as Agent 99, the protagonists of the show. The show followed Maxwell and Agent 99 fighting a enemy of their agency called Kaos. The series was a parody of spy thrillers that came out around that time including films from the James Bond series.
It got a reboot film in 2008 with Steve Carell (The Big Short) as Maxwell and Anne Hathaway (Interstellar) as Agent 99. Nothing was confirmed for the movie getting a sequel but the movie did receive a spin-off titled Get Smart’s Bruce and Lloyd: Out of Control. The movie was released straight to video and starred Masi Oka (Heroes) and Nate Torrence (Zootopia) who were side characters in the 2008 spin-off. No other information about the new reboot has been confirmed.
