Universal Pictures has greenlit an adaptation of Let It Snow, based on collection of short stories by authors John Green, Maureen Johnson, and Lauren Myracle. The film will be a series of three vignettes, each focusing on its own unexpected romance over the course of a single Christmas Eve.
Kay Cannon (Pitch Perfect) will be adapting the stories for the big screen. Universal plans to release the movie on December 9, 2016—a date currently free from competition, but only one week before the release of the Star Wars: Rogue One spinoff. Let It Snow will be drawing its audience from the two big sellers of ensemble romance flicks like He’s Just Not That Into You or New Year’s Eve as well as the increasingly popular YA genre.
All three authors are published young adult writers. Johnson is known for her Shades of London and Suite Scarlett series, while Myracle has published three best-selling “IM” books: ttyl, ttfn, and l8er, g8er. Green is not only a well-known YA author, but has also seen two of his books turned into movies—last year’s The Fault in Our Stars and next month’s Paper Towns—with third, Looking for Alaska, also in the process of adaptation. With a fourth addition of Green’s works to the silver screen, he is becoming the go-to author for young adult film material.
