The final frontier is coming back to theater screens for the first time in almost ten years. The duo that brought audiences Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves will bring a brand new Star Trek movie to the big screen. Although it’s made a bigger impact in the realm of television, Star Trek hasn’t slacked when it comes to motion pictures. It first broke on to the silver screen with 1979’s aptly titled Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and would go on to spawn several sequels following the original Star Trek cast, as well as the crew from The Next Generation.
As stated, the creative duo behind 2023’s Dungeons & Dragons, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, will be going where no man has gone before. On top of that, the duo wrote and directed 2015’s Vacation reboot, Game Night, and even wrote Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Hollywood Reporter noted that, although keeping steady on television, Star Trek has struggled on the big screen in recent years. As stated, the last Trek movie was nearly ten years ago, taking the form of Star Trek: Beyond. Unfortunately, the film wound up underperforming, with a global total of just under $350 million, putting the film side of the franchise on ice for nearly a decade.
Reportedly, the film will not connect to any pre-established Trek story. While Star Trek is a franchise ripe with opportunity for original storytelling, this does shoot down some fans’ hopes of seeing a continuation of Beyond and what that timeline could’ve held.
