John Boyega Likens Acting Roles in Franchises to “Luxury Jail” & Wants to Work on More Projects Like ‘Small Axe’

If there’s one actor who knows something about franchises, it would be someone who’s starred in one of the highest grossing film franchises of all time. During an interview with CinemaBlend, Star Wars actor John Boyega discussed what it was like to work on the most recent trilogy, and why he’s excited to work on different projects.

“Being in a big franchise, it’s kind of like luxury jail sometimes for an actor when you want to do something else,” Boyega said. “Because remember, in a franchise you’re working on one character for many years, which can starve your other muscles.”

Boyega recently starred in one of Steve McQueen (III)’s Small Axe films for Amazon. The British anthology film series follows distinct stories of the lives of West Indian immigrants in London from the 1960s to the 1980s. Each of the films in the series have earned more acclaim than any of the films in the newest Star Wars trilogy did.

“We’re all a part of the same industry so I’d heard about Steve’s directing style, I was really really curious and excited to have the opportunity anyway to be a part of it,” said Boyega. “And when it came through I was on the tele like ‘this is my moment.’”

The actor currently has a few projects he’s currently working on, including Juel Taylor’s They Cloned Tyrone, Chase Palmer’s Naked Singularity, and Charles & Thomas Guard’s Borderland. So, it seems like Boyega’s work to avoid being defined by his role in a huge franchise is paying off.
