Puppets are commonly used in comedy acts and skits as a way of bringing an animated character, in a way, to real life. But has there been a story where puppets become more than just a comedy stunt? Happytime Murders aims to deliver on that premise, where humans and puppets live together, but puppets are seen lower-class. After the murders of the characters of the hot puppet TV show The Happytime Gang, a former puppet policeman turned private eye joins the case.
Joel McHale, one of the main actors in the hit TV show Community, has officially joined the cast as a hard-boiled FBI agent working on the case, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He will be working alongside hit comedy star Melissa McCarthy (Spy, The Heat), who plays the main detective that worked with the puppet cop previously. The supporting cast also includes Maya Rudolph (Bridesmaids, Big Hero 6), Elizabeth Banks (The Lego Movie, The Hunger Games), Bill Barretta (The Muppets Franchise), and Leslie David Baker (The Office, Fallen Stars).
The film is being directed by Brian Henson (Muppets Treasure Island, Farscape) with a script written by Todd Berger. The film is currently being shot in Los Angeles with a supposed August 18, 2018 release date.
