Joel Kinnaman the Frontrunner to Replace Tom Hardy in ‘Suicide Squad’

Joel Kinnaman (Robocop) is in early talks to play Rick Flag in the upcoming Suicide Squad movie. Kinnaman would take the role Tom Hardy was set to play before he left the project last month.

The movie follows a team of DC Comics villains – including Deadshot (Will Smith), Rick Flag, Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Boomerang (Jai Courtney), and Enchantress (Cara Delevinge) – assembled via blackmail by federal agent Amanda Waller (rumored to be Viola Davis), to do some under the table work for the government.

This would be a big role for Kinnnaman, who caught his first big break on AMC’s The Killing and then played the title tole in the 2014 remake of the classic 80s action movie RoboCop. He has also had roles in Safe House (2012) and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (2011). With only a handful of mainstream movies under his belt, Kinnaman would seem a downgrade from Hardy in terms of audience awareness, as RoboCop underperformed in terms of critical reception and domestic box office. It seems likely that Warner Bros. will place much more publicity on the film’s remaining stars Will Smith and Margot Robbie, as well as the appearance of Jared Leto’s take on the iconic Joker.

Suicide Squad is scheduled to be released August 5, 2016. It will be the third movie in the new DC Cinematic Universe that launched with Man of Steel (2013) and will continue with Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice opening March 25 of that year.
