Joe Russo Discusses Importance Of Upcoming ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ For The MCU

Joe Russo is building anticipation for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, with Robert Downey Jr. also declaring the film has solved the post-Endgame MCU struggles.  Russo, who directed alongside his brother Anthony Russo, labels Doomsday as the “…most mature, emotionally complex…” film in the MCU.

In an interview with CBR, Russo discussed how Doomsday and the 2027 sequel Secret Wars have been challenging to bring together compared to their previous outings for Marvel.

The stakes keep going up. But emotional complexity is always the answer. You bring emotional complexity to anything, and it enriches it. It makes it a fuller experience for the audience.

Stephen McFeely and Michael Waldron penned the script for the film, with Marvel head Kevin Feige overseeing the project as it came to life.  The Russo brothers’ previous directing outings in the MCU included: Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.  Joe Russo also talked about how in discussions with RDJ, it was understood that in a way, this film would bring the MCU back to “phase zero”.  Downey Jr. talked about how all the different characters would be able to come together in this singular story.

There’s something going on in Doomsday, and forward that is literally the only antidote to, ‘How do you not have these films be let down after an Infinity War and an Endgame… And boy, have we labored long and hard to bring that down… It’s about the way it’s been structured, and the other characters.

Joe Russo also took some time to champion recent major wins for Hollywood and movies, Obsession and Backrooms.  Avengers: Doomsday will hit theaters on December 18.
