A24 has entered final negotiations for an untitled drama that is slated to be Joaquin Phoenix‘s next film following the upcoming Joker according to Deadline.
The film will be written and directed by 20th Century Woman and Beginners filmmaker Mike Mills with production scheduled to begin in the autumn.
Phoenix’s performance as one of DC’s most formidable supervillains has been critically-acclaimed at film festivals around the world recently winning a Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. Phoenix has been widely-considered as a front-runner for Best Actor at this year’s Academy Awards for his role in Joker given his physical and emotional weight acknowledged by critics.
Joker will become the first live-action Batman franchise film to receive an R-rating from the Motion Picture Association of America due to its violent and off-putting content. The director of Joker Todd Phillips confirmed that the film would be a standalone feature and would not explore a sequel.
Producers on the untitled film include Chelsea Barnard, Lila Yacoub, Andrea Longacre-White.
Phoenix is a three-time Oscar nominee for which he was individuated for his roles in Gladiator, Walk the Line and The Master.
Joker is set to be released in theaters worldwide on October 4th 2019.
