Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara Welcome First Child River, Named After Actor’s Late Brother

Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix and fiancée Rooney Mara have reportedly welcomed their first child together, naming him River, the same name given to Joaquin’s late brother.

The news came from Russian filmmaker Victor Kossakovsky, who recently worked with Joaquin on the dialogue-free documentary Gunda. “He just got a baby by the way,” Kossakovsky said on Sunday while speaking at the 2020 Zurich Film Festival. “A beautiful son called River.”

River Phoenix unexpectedly died on the night of Halloween 1993 from an accidental overdose of cocaine and heroin. The actor was just 23.

When accepting the Academy Award for Best Actor earlier this year for his performance in Joker, Joaquin briefly spoke about his late brother. “When he was 17, my brother wrote this lyric, he said, ‘Run to the rescue with love, and peace will follow’,” Joaquin said at the end of his speech.

Joaquin and Mara met on the set of Spike Jonze’s 2013 film Her. They made their debut as a couple at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. Rumors of engagement sparked last year when Mara was photographed wearing a large diamond ring.

Joaquin’s next film, C’mon C’mon, is currently in post-production. The film will star the actor as an artist embarking on a cross-country trip with his young nephew.
