The 73rd Annual Cannes Film Festival has been rescheduled to a three day event from October 27th to October 29th.
The organizers recently announced this on their website. The original festival was scheduled for May, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic had been postponed until this announcement. The “2020 Special Cannes” will be held at the Louis Lumière auditorium of the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès.
The four films announced are ‘Un triomphe’(‘The Big Hit!’) by Emmanuel Courcol, a dramedy about prisoners staging ‘Waiting for Godot, Bruno Podalydès’ ‘Les Deux Alfred’ (‘The French Tech’), about family and starting a new job, Japanese director Naomi Kawase’s ‘Asa Ga Kuru’ (‘True Mothers’), about a child’s biological mother contacting the adoptive mother, and Georigan Déa Kulumbegashvili’s ‘Beginning,’ about a woman’s inner turmoil after her town is attacked.
All receive some praise at other festivals, the most being Kulumbergashvili’s wins for best director and actress at Sebastián International Film Festival. In addition to those four movies, there will be short films as well as films from the Cinéfondation, a school that has been helping international filmmakers at Cannes since 1998.
As of now, nothing has been directly stated with regards to social distancing, mask wearing and Covid mitigation as the announcement does mention the previews are open to the general public. A delegate of Cannes, Thierry Frémaux, stating “the dinners and meetings epitomise the happiness we’ll all feel to be together in Cannes in October!”
It will be interesting to see if there are any restrictions for people that attend. The films will be voted on a by judges that are yet to be announced.
The Cannes Film Festival 2020 is now scheduled for October, while the 74th annual is still, as of now, scheduled for May 2021.
