Jim Carrey may have tweeted himself into some serious trouble. With Kick-Ass 2, the ultra violent superhero sequel to 2010’s surprise hit Kick-Ass, getting ready for release, Carrey took back his support for the movie when he tweeted that he “shot the film a month before Sandy Hook and now in all good conscience cannot support that level of violence.”
So what does this mean for the star and the film? When big summer movies come out you can bet that the performers involved are going to hit the press circuit. Appearances on late night talk shows, celebrity news programs, etc. are expected, indeed, are usually written into their contracts. For one of the big names in a film to blatantly bash the movie just before it’s release is practically unheard of. The film also stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, who have not commented on Carrey’s tweet at the time of this article.
Publicist Ronn Torossian of the PR firm 5WPR perhaps stated it best. “It’s rather hypocritical for Jim to take a major paycheck and (then) ‘withdraw’ support for an upcoming film that he appears in… This commentary is likely to hurt the film.” If he’s correct, Kick-Ass 2 could be in for a rough summer. The film is scheduled to open in August.
