Jesse Plemons will play Plutarch Heavensbee in the next Hunger Games prequel film, originally played by Philip Seymour Hoffman. The prequel film, titled The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, is adapted from Suzanne Collins’ novel of the same name and takes place 24 years before the first Hunger Games movie.
The plot for the upcoming film centers around the 50th annual Hunger Games, which is the second quarter quell in the Hunger Games universe. Plemons will be playing the future head game master, where he is in District 12 for the annual reaping of tributes. Plemons originally gained recognition for his role as Todd in the Breaking Bad series, and garnered recent attention in The Power of the Dog and Killers of the Flower Moon.
Erin Westerman, who is co-president of Lionsgate, commented about Plemons by saying,
“Jesse is one of the most talented actors of his generation, with a proven record of picking his roles selectively. We are honored that he has chosen to bring his own take to one of the most fascinating figures in Panem, and feel that his previous collaboration with Philip Seymour Hoffman makes it all the more special. His Plutarch will be both a tribute to the character fans have already come to know and a portrayal he makes his own. We can’t wait for audiences to see it.”
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping currently has a theatrical release on November 20, 2026.
