Jesse Eisenberg is set to make his directorial debut at Cannes Critics’ Week with his film When You Finish Saving The World, starring Finn Wolfhard and Julianne Moore. The plan is to premiere at the festival on May 18th. Having opened at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the feature will have a non-competitive showing at Cannes.
Moore and Wolfhard are set to co-star in the dramatic comedy following the story of a politically committed mother and her ambitious son, who wants to follow his passion for music, and craves social media fame.
The 2022 Critics’ week has revealed its lineup this past Wednesday, announcing 11 feature films and 13 short films that will make up the showings for the 61st annual edition of the festival. This year, seven films in competition are from first-time filmmakers that range geographically from small Portuguese villages as the setting for Cristèle Alves Meira’s Alma Viva to a Tehran night taxi in director Ali Berhad’s Imagine. We go from the Colombian rainforest of Andrés Ramírez Pulido’s La Jauría to a beach resort for British tourists in Aftersun, from U.K. director Charlotte Wells, which features Normal People star Paul Mescal alongside newcomer Francesca Corio.
When it comes to the competition, we will see films from first time director Mikko Myllylahti, who co-wrote Juho Kuosmanen’s Finnish arthouse cross-over The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Maki, the winner of the 2016 Un Certain Regard award, with his film, The Woodcutter Story, which is described as a tragic comedy.
We also get to see the coming of age film from first-time French director Simon Rieth, Summer Scars. And Belgian filmmaker Emmanuelle Nicot’s debut Love According to Dalva.
Eisenberg’s film When You Finish Saving The World debuts at the festival on May 18th.
