In a recent GQ interview, Amanda Seyfried reflected on her most iconic roles, including Needy from the 2009 cult classic, Jennifer’s Body. While explaining how the Karyn Kusama film is “a perfect movie”, Seyfried addressed the failures of the marketing team to accurately reflect the contents of the film. “The marketing sucked,” she said emphatically.
Jennifer’s Body is about a high school cheerleader who becomes possessed and kills her male classmates. Megan Fox played the titular role with Seyfried playing her nerdy best friend. Oscar-winner Diablo Cody penned the script that the Mean Girls actress said was “cheapened” by the marketing team. To her, the film was about female empowerment, not a “gory romp.”
For the 10 year anniversary of the film, Vox published an article entitled, How Jennifer’s Body went from a flop in 2009 to a feminist cult classic today. The article reiterates Seyfried’s point – the marketing team was much too concerned with Fox being a sex symbol. The trailer seemed more focused on hyping a potential kiss between Seyfried and Fox than promoting the fun, campy societal commentary it was meant to be.
Hopefully, things have changed now as Seyfried confirmed in a past interview that sequel is in the works. To GQ, she excitedly remarked: “We all just had a lot of fun, so I want to celebrate it by doing a sequel.”
